How to Renew Your Cédula From Abroad
For the first time, the Junta Central Electoral is letting Dominicans abroad renew their cédula without flying home — and without waiting for their birthday.
Since May 20, 2026, the JCE has run a cédula-abroad program at Dominican consulates — the first time this has ever been possible outside the country. It runs through January 2028, tied to the same rollout that's replacing the old cédula nationwide.
📅 No birthday required
In DR, cédula renewals are tied to your birth month. Abroad, that rule doesn't apply — you can book an appointment any time, which is the single biggest difference from how renewal works on the island.
📍 Where it's available
Major consulates in the United States, Europe, and the Caribbean are running the program, including New York, Miami, Madrid, Barcelona, and Panama. Confirm your specific consulate has it enabled before you count on it.
🆓 Free, but appointment-only
There's no charge for the renewal itself. What's mandatory is booking ahead — walk-ins aren't part of this program the way they sometimes are for other consular services.
