Comparing Remittance Apps to DR: Fees, Speed, and What Actually Works

Remittances to DR topped $6.2 billion in the first half of 2026 alone. The app you pick changes how much of that actually arrives.

Every remittance provider advertises a low fee, but the fee on the screen is rarely the full cost. The exchange rate spread — the gap between the mid-market rate and what you're actually given — is where providers make most of their margin, and it's the number most people never check.

💸 Cheapest for larger transfers

Wise is consistently among the lowest-cost options for bigger transfers, charging roughly 0.5–1.2% and using the real mid-market exchange rate rather than a marked-up one. For a $500+ transfer, that difference adds up fast compared to flat-fee competitors.

🏪 Best for cash pickup

Western Union and MoneyGram have the widest network of physical pickup locations across DR, which matters if the recipient doesn't have a bank account or a smartphone. Expect to pay $8–25 in flat fees plus a 1.5–3% exchange spread — noticeably more than app-based transfers, but with unmatched reach.

🇩🇴 The DR-native flat-fee standout

DomiPago, a Dominican-built app, charges a flat $2.99 regardless of the amount sent — a structure worth comparing directly against percentage-based competitors for larger transfers, where a flat fee can end up far cheaper.

Do this before you send: compare the total amount your recipient will get in pesos across two or three apps for the same transfer, not just the advertised fee. The exchange spread is where the real cost hides.
